Project Overview

This project involved a complete tile regrouting and partial tile replacement for a 15-year-old swimming pool at a semi-detached home in Taman SEA, Petaling Jaya. The pool measured 8m x 4m and had suffered extensive grout deterioration, with over 120 cracked or loose tiles and visible water seepage through the tile bed. The homeowner needed a fast, thorough solution that would restore the pool to a watertight, modern-looking condition without requiring a full reconstruction.

The Problem

After 15 years of exposure to pool chemicals and Malaysia's tropical climate, the original cement-based grout had deteriorated significantly. Water was seeping behind the tiles and into the concrete shell, causing tiles to loosen, crack, and in some areas pop off entirely. The homeowner had noticed increasing water loss -- approximately 3cm per day beyond normal evaporation -- indicating that the seepage had compromised the pool's waterproof integrity.

Left untreated, the water infiltration would have caused further structural damage to the concrete shell, potentially leading to far more costly repairs. The pool had been drained and out of use for several weeks by the time the client contacted us.

Our Approach

We conducted a thorough on-site inspection of every tile surface, mapping out all areas of grout failure, loose tiles, and visible seepage points. Rather than a patchwork repair that would leave weak points, we recommended a complete regrouting of the entire pool surface with modern epoxy grout, replacing all 120+ damaged tiles with matching porcelain mosaic tiles, and applying a waterproof membrane to the most severely affected areas before retiling.

The Process

1

Pool Draining & Surface Assessment

Fully drained the pool and conducted a detailed tile-by-tile inspection. Marked all damaged, loose, and cracked tiles for replacement. Identified the primary seepage zones along the pool floor and lower walls where grout failure was most severe.

2

Tile Removal & Surface Preparation

Carefully removed all 120+ damaged tiles and stripped the old deteriorated grout from the entire pool surface using professional grout removal tools. Cleaned and prepared the concrete substrate, repairing any areas where the shell had been compromised by water infiltration.

3

Waterproof Membrane & Tile Installation

Applied a flexible waterproof membrane to the most severely affected zones. Installed new porcelain mosaic tiles to match the existing pool colour scheme using polymer-modified thin-set adhesive rated for submerged applications. Ensured uniform spacing and alignment across all replaced sections.

4

Epoxy Grouting & Final Testing

Applied premium two-part epoxy grout across the entire 45 sqm pool surface -- both new and existing tiles. Epoxy grout is chemical-resistant, waterproof, and far more durable than cement grout. Refilled the pool, monitored water levels for 48 hours to confirm zero leakage, and balanced the water chemistry before handover.

Before & After

Before

Crumbling grout lines throughout the pool. Over 120 tiles cracked, loose, or completely detached. Visible water seepage through the tile bed causing 3cm daily water loss. Pool drained and unusable for weeks. The overall appearance was worn, stained, and outdated after 15 years.

After

A fully regrouted pool with pristine epoxy grout lines and 120+ new porcelain mosaic tiles seamlessly blended with the existing surface. Zero water leakage confirmed over 48-hour monitoring. The pool looks fresh, modern, and is fully watertight with a 2-year warranty on all workmanship.

Tips for Pool Tile Maintenance

  • Inspect your pool grout lines at least once a year. Early detection of crumbling or discoloured grout can prevent costly water seepage damage to the concrete shell.
  • Choose epoxy grout over cement grout for pool applications -- it is waterproof, chemical-resistant, and lasts 3-5x longer in submerged conditions.
  • If you notice unexplained water loss (beyond normal evaporation of 3-5mm per day in Malaysia), have your tiles and grout inspected immediately.
  • Keep your pool water chemistry balanced. Excessively acidic water (low pH) accelerates grout and tile deterioration significantly.
  • When replacing tiles, always use adhesive and grout rated for permanent submersion. Standard bathroom-grade products will fail within months in a pool environment.
